A Message from Your Superintendent

August 24, 2017

Dear District 57 Families,

The 2017-18 school year is off to a great start. Last Wednesday, we welcomed 2,222 students to Fairview, Lions Park, Lincoln and Westbrook. We were happy to see our returning families, and we extend a warm welcome to those who are new to the District. I also want to welcome new Lions Park principal Katie Kelly, our three new assistant principals (Una Durkan at Fairview, Danielle Bielenda at Lions Park and Kristin Vonder Haar at Westbrook) and the many new teachers and staff who have joined District 57. We had a 20 percent workforce turnover this summer, much higher than normal. While this can present challenges, everyone has worked together to make the transitions as seamless as possible.

We’re also kicking off the year with some key facilities, curriculum and technology changes:

· The mobile unit at Westbrook was installed over the summer and now houses the staff workroom/lounge and music classroom. Westbrook was at capacity last year, and this year’s enrollment required two more sections. The mobile unit is the best and most cost-effective way to meet the needs of our growing community for the time being.

· We have rolled out enhanced math instruction at Lincoln. We restructured the school day so that middle schoolers now have 39 additional minutes of math each day, to ensure they’re receiving the best possible preparation for high school and beyond.

· Also at Lincoln, we have completed the rollout of the 1:1 Computer Ratio Program. All of our middle school students now have their own Chromebook computers to use for the year, giving them quick and easy access to online learning at school and at home.

District 57 has been able to make these additions and upgrades because we have prioritized projects and carefully allocated limited resources. There is much more we need to accomplish, including finding long-term solutions to our space issues – but not until we address our significant financial challenges. The School Board is in the process of determining whether to seek an Education Fund Tax Rate increase (referendum) in 2018, and a Community Task Force has been appointed to study the issue and make a recommendation. We will be putting out several communications pieces to educate the community. I encourage you to read this information and attend Task Force and School Board meetings if you can. We value community input as we move through this process.

Please see the attached flier that outlines the many ways that District 57 communicates with you. Of course, this includes Facebook and Twitter. If you haven’t been on our social media lately, check out the wonderful photos from the first day of school and the eclipse (thanks to the staff members who turned that day into a memorable learning opportunity!).

Welcome back to school. It’s going to be a great year!
