A Message from Your Superintendent

September 11, 2017

As you’re aware, District 57 is considering asking voters to approve a tax referendum in the March 2018 election. To help explain the District’s financial situation, potential solutions and the process we are using to determine next steps, we have planned three Community Forums. These will be in-depth discussions with members of District Administration, and there will be opportunities for participants to ask questions and provide input. In addition, I will be giving a brief presentation and overview at three PTO meetings. See the schedule below.

Below you also will find a Q&A that briefly outlines the current situation and the actions that are being taken. We will put out other communications in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please attend a Community Forum and a PTO meeting so you can be informed about these important issues.

Community Forum Schedule (Fairview Multi-Purpose Room):

· Thursday, October 12, 7-8 p.m.

· Saturday, October 14, 9-10 a.m.

· Wednesday, October 18, 7-8 p.m.

PTO Meeting Schedule (Brief Presentations by Dr. Aumiller)

· Monday, October 16, 6 p.m. – Fairview

· Wednesday, October 18, noon – Westbrook

· Monday, November 6, 7-8 p.m. – Lions Park

Q & A

Why is District 57 considering placing a referendum on the ballot in 2018?

Due to factors such as growing enrollment, rising operating costs, state and federal cuts, and unfunded mandates, District 57 has continued to draw down its fund balance. Unfortunately, this is not sustainable. We are considering placing a referendum on the ballot next year, to address the District’s highest priority operating and facility maintenance needs.

How will the community get to weigh in on the funding proposal being considered?
With help from a 29-member Citizen Task Force comprised of business leaders, civic leaders, educators, parents, representatives of our senior community and other stakeholders, District 57 has been working hard to develop a funding solution that meets the needs of both our students and taxpayers. In the coming weeks and months, the District will share information about the proposal being considered and gather community feedback via public outreach meetings, a public opinion mail survey and related efforts. Nothing is set in stone until we gather additional public input.

What is the earliest that a decision will be made to place a referendum on the ballot next year?
The earliest that the Board of Education would make a final decision would be December 2017, providing plenty of time for public input.
