Dear District 57 Families,
Approximately 2,200 students started school last week at Fairview, Lions Park, Lincoln and Westbrook. I'm happy to report that we got off to a great start in all four buildings! It was wonderful to see the students' smiling faces, and we all look forward to a year full of opportunities to learn and grow.
We had a busy summer in District 57, completing several projects in and around the school buildings. We made security improvements based on the findings of last year's security audit, we addressed a drainage issue at Lincoln, improved and expanded the bicycle staging area at Lincoln, and we installed additional Internet access points at Fairview and Lincoln, to enable more students to take advantage of online learning at the same time. (Similar technology work is scheduled to be completed at Lions Park and Westbrook next summer.) Of course, we also expanded and enhanced the Westbrook parking lot, to improve safety and address congestion. I know the families and staff are appreciating the extra parking spaces and more efficient traffic flow. We plan to finish the entrance/exit on Central Road when we receive permitting from the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Preparations for the new school year also included a great deal of professional development. For example, teachers learned new and exciting ways to introduce science and math concepts, and they explored creative approaches to promoting phonics and word development for younger students. I'm thankful to District 57 staff for making professional learning a priority in the summer months.
I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome the new staff members who are joining us this year. They are great additions to our schools. I also welcome all families who are new to District 57. The schools are eager to get to know your children, and staff members are available to answer any questions you might have.
There are many ways for families to get involved in and stay connected with District 57 schools. Please take advantage of these opportunities. The District and the schools will communicate with you frequently throughout the year. This is the first of several Superintendent’s Messages. The school newsletters, which are emailed on Fridays, and District newsletter, which is emailed two to three times a year, have a lot of important information. Please also regularly check www.d57.org and follow the District on Facebook and Twitter (@dist57). Our social media is a great place to receive important updates and learn about many of the exciting things going on in the schools.
Thank you for everything you do to prepare your children. The schools look forward to partnering with you throughout the year!
