A Message from Your Superintendent

March 21, 2018

The District 57 referendum has passed, with a final vote of 5,131 (70.29%) to 2,169 (29.71%). Community members have spoken, and the District will receive the funding it needs to avoid cuts and maintain current staffing levels, class sizes and programming, while addressing major deferred maintenance. We will be able to balance our budget and will no longer need to dip into our reserves. In short, we will be in a much healthier financial position and receive property tax funding that is closer to surrounding districts.

District 57 has had an uncertain future for quite a while. It’s a relief to now know our next steps and move forward in a positive way, doing what we do best. Getting to this point has required a great deal of hard work and teamwork by many people. I am grateful to them all:

• The parents and community members who became informed about a complicated, challenging financial situation, attending meetings, asking questions and reading what we put out.
• Those who got involved in the process and worked to educate others about the issues and what they believe to be the best solution.
• Those who served on the Community Task Force that analyzed the situation and helped determine what the referendum request would be.
• Our Board members for guiding the District and making difficult decisions that are in the best interests of our students.
• The staff members in the schools for the great work they do every day, and the administrative staff, particularly Adam Parisi, for carefully allocating our limited resources, communicating with stakeholders and always being available for questions.
• And, finally, the voters, for making it to the polls and making your wishes known.

Here are our next steps, now that the referendum has passed: On April 19, we will present the Board with a staffing plan for next year that mirrors this year’s plan, i.e. no cuts. Also, next year’s student fees, which had been set in January, will be lowered to resemble this year’s fees. In May, the Board will vote to re-instate the contracts of the Fairview and Lions Park assistant principals. The construction and maintenance budgets will be increased to enable needed repairs and safety and security upgrades. We will meet soon with District architects to revisit the long-range facilities plan and begin prioritizing projects for summer 2019.

I’m sure students, staff and families are ready for spring break. It will be here in just a few days! I hope you have a wonderful break and enjoy the time with your family. We look forward to seeing the students when school resumes on April 2!
