At the September 13th meeting of the Citizen Task Force, I presented information about potential cuts for next school year. I want to share some of those details with you here so that you can be fully informed as we move through the process of determining whether to place a referendum on the ballot.

As you know, due to factors such as growing enrollment, rising operating costs, state and federal cuts, and unfunded mandates, District 57 has continued to draw down its fund balance, which is not sustainable. That’s why we are considering a referendum, to address our highest priority operating and facility maintenance needs. As we move through this process, we must also prepare for the possibility of the referendum not being placed on the ballot or not being successful. So we have appointed a small budget deficit reduction committee that is made up of staff, parents and community members. The committee is charged with reducing the District’s deficit by 30 to 50 percent, which equates to cuts of up to $1 million (with a minimum of $600,000). These cuts would affect staffing and programs and would go into effect next school year IF the community does not approve a tax referendum in March.

Members of the Deficit Reduction Committee will have the difficult task of identifying potential cuts and making recommendations to the School Board. They will consider cutting full-time positions and instituting larger class sizes, as well as eliminating or cutting back in several areas, including ESP staff, administration, literacy and math support, elementary art and music, additional middle school math minutes, band and orchestra, and interscholastic and intramural sports and clubs.

These are obviously extremely difficult decisions. We hope there will be a funding solution so that drastic cuts do not have to be made, but it is imperative that we make financial preparations for all possibilities.

I encourage you to attend one of the upcoming Community Forums, where Administration will give in-depth presentations, and participants will provide input and ask questions. The Forums will be held in the Fairview Multi-Purpose Room on the following days:

· Thursday, October 12, 7-8 p.m.

· Saturday, October 14, 9-10 a.m.

· Wednesday, October 18, 7-8 p.m.

Thank you for staying informed during this critical time for our school district.
