A Message from Your Superintendent

November 17, 2017

Good morning. At last night’s School Board meeting, the Community Task Force presented its recommendation that the Board ask for an 85-cent limiting tax rate increase in the March 2018 election. After much discussion, Board members instructed Administration to draft a ballot question and include the 85-cent increase. Here are upcoming key dates and next steps:

Thursday, Dec. 7: Special School Board meeting (7 p.m., Fairview) to discuss the ballot language and possibly vote on whether to place the 85-cent referendum on the ballot for March 2018. The Board will also be discussing possible staffing and program cuts in the event of an unsuccessful referendum. There will be an opportunity for community comments.

Thursday, Dec. 21: Regularly scheduled School Board business meeting and public hearing on the levy (7 p.m., Fairview). Board members will discuss and vote on the referendum question, if they did not already vote on Dec. 7. They also will vote on the tax levy. There will be an opportunity for community comments.

Once a school board votes to place a referendum on the ballot, the usual next step is for a campaign committee to be formed. This cannot be funded by the school district; it must be a grass-roots effort that is run independently of the district. Any community member who is interested in learning about serving as campaign co-chair should email Jenny Quinn at jennykq@yahoo.com.
As always, thank you for staying engaged in this important process. I wish all of our District 57 families and staff a happy Thanksgiving!
