As we prepare for the colder months, it’s important to review our inclement weather guidelines and emergency closing procedures to keep everyone informed and safe.
Snow Day and E-Learning Update
For the 2025-2026 school year, our approach looks a bit different from prior years due to the major construction projects underway at Lincoln Middle School and Westbrook School for Young Learners. To keep these projects on schedule, we must maintain firm control of the academic calendar. For this reason:
- If any of our inclement weather thresholds are met (see below), District 57 will implement an e-learning day. This approach will remain in place throughout the 2027-2028 school year.
- E-learning days ensure continuity of learning without extending the school year—an important factor given the construction timeline.
- Families are encouraged to review the district’s E-Learning Informational Document, which outlines expectations, schedules, attendance procedures, and teacher communication. [e-Learning link]
- Closure decisions will be based on the unique circumstances of each situation.
- Families will be notified of school closures through ParentSquare, using the Instant Alert function, which sends notifications via text, email, and phone call. If the decision to close school is made after 9:30 p.m., the District will wait to send a notification until 5:30 a.m. the following morning to minimize disruptions during late-night hours.
Weather-Related School Closing Protocols
When determining whether to close schools due to inclement weather and implement e-Learning days, District 57 follows these careful protocols:
- Temperature Guidelines: Schools will close if sustained wind chills reach -30°F or colder, or if actual temperatures are -15°F or colder during travel times (5:30-9:00 a.m. and 2:30-5:30 p.m.).
- Snow/Ice Conditions: We evaluate road and sidewalk safety, the ability to plow, and the readiness of local municipalities and transportation services.
- Forecast Coordination: We work with neighboring districts and monitor National Weather Service forecasts to make informed decisions.
