Inclement Weather Guidelines and Snow Day/E-Learning Plans

As we prepare for the colder months, it’s important to review our inclement weather guidelines and emergency closing procedures to keep everyone informed and safe.

Snow Day and E-Learning Update
For the 2024-2025 school year, we’ve made updates to our plans based on feedback from family and staff surveys. Here’s what you need to know:
  • Snow Days: The first two emergency days will be used as traditional snow days. These days will need to be made up at the end of the school year.
  • E-Learning Days: If additional closures are required (up to three days), e-learning days will be implemented to minimize disruptions to learning. Please review the District's E-Learning informational document for more details [e-Learning link]. If a closure leads to an e-learning day, your child’s principal will provide school-specific information.
  • Closure decisions will be based on the unique circumstances of each situation.
  • Families will be notified of school closures through ParentSquare, using the Instant Alert function, which sends notifications via text, email, and phone call. If the decision to close school is made after 9:30 p.m., the District will wait to send a notification until 5:30 a.m. the following morning to minimize disruptions during late-night hours.

Weather-Related School Closing Protocols
When determining whether to close schools due to inclement weather, District 57 follows these careful protocols:
  • Temperature Guidelines: Schools will close if sustained wind chills reach -30°F or colder, or if actual temperatures are -15°F or colder during travel times (5:30-9:00 a.m. and 2:30-5:30 p.m.).
  • Snow/Ice Conditions: We evaluate road and sidewalk safety, the ability to plow, and the readiness of local municipalities and transportation services.
  • Forecast Coordination: We work with neighboring districts and monitor National Weather Service forecasts to make informed decisions.
