Portrait of a Graduate

What is a Portrait of a Graduate?

District 57 has developed a shared understanding of the essential skills and attitudes that all students should have by the time they graduate eighth grade. This understanding is called the "Portrait of a Graduate" and has been collaboratively developed by the district. The Portrait of a Graduate aligns with academic standards, connects to best practices in teaching and learning, reflects diverse perspectives of the community, and identifies clear and consistent language to promote common experiences that will help students build skills over time.

What was the process for developing the D57 Portrait of a Graduate?

To develop the Portrait of a Graduate, District 57 engaged in a two-year collaborative process that included a review of current research related to the traits and capabilities of highly successful individuals. The process also involved an examination of national standards in math, language arts, science, social science, and social-emotional learning, as well as professional practices for educators. Additionally, 70 students and staff members participated in learning experiences that embedded the characteristics present within the Portrait of a Graduate. Feedback was also gathered from 268 community members and 1,108 fourth through eighth grade students through surveys. Furthermore, 42 focus groups consisting of students, parents/guardians, and District 57 staff members were conducted to gather more input. Overall, more than 1,300 voices were represented in the development of the Portrait of a Graduate.
